Hyderabad, February 2026: The Indian Organisation for Rare Diseases (IORD), in collaboration with L V Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI) and Rainbow Children’s Hospital, will observe World Rare Disease Day 2026 with a focused scientific conference on Rare Diseases in Ophthalmology on 28 February 2026 (9:30 AM – 12:50 PM) in Hyderabad.

The conference aims to raise awareness about rare eye diseases, promote early diagnosis, strengthen referral systems, and foster collaboration between ophthalmologists, pediatricians, genetic specialists, researchers, and patient advocacy groups.

Rare ophthalmic diseases such as inherited retinal dystrophies, congenital cataracts, optic atrophy, and other genetic eye disorders often remain underdiagnosed and undertreated in India. Early detection and coordinated care are crucial to improving patient outcomes and quality of life.

A key highlight of the event will be the official release of the IORD Annual Yearbook showcasing the organization’s advocacy initiatives, patient support programs, and policy engagement efforts across India.

The conference will also feature the premiere screening of the IORD Rare Disease Short Film, which captures the lived experiences, challenges, and resilience of individuals and families affected by rare diseases.

Leading experts from LV Prasad Eye Institute, Rainbow Children’s Hospital, and other eminent institutions will deliver scientific presentations and participate in a panel discussion on advancing rare ophthalmic care in India.

Speaking about the initiative, representatives from IORD emphasized the urgent need for structured rare disease ecosystems, improved access to genetic testing, and multidisciplinary collaboration to address the growing burden of rare diseases affecting vision.

The conference is expected to bring together ophthalmologists, pediatric specialists, genetic experts, medical students, researchers, policymakers, patient groups, and media representatives.

World Rare Disease Day is observed globally to advocate for equitable healthcare access, research, and policy support for individuals living with rare diseases.
