Now, Disability Certificate Only Through UDID Portal is Made Mandatory

    By IORD | News | 0 comment | 12 May, 2021 | 0

If you are a Rare Disease patient in need of a disability certificate, you may no longer need to face the hassle of going around offices as the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD), Government of India, has now made it mandatory for all physically challenged in India to apply for one only through online mode.

The process has to be completed on UDID (Unique Disability ID) portal, according to a Gazette notification SO 1736(E) dated 05.05.2021 issued by DEPwD. The notification also made online disability certification mandatory for all states/UTs with effect from 1st June 2021.

    Why Unique Disability ID

The idea for Unique Disability ID stems from the need to create a national level PAN-India database of people with disabilities to ensure there is transparency and uniformity in streamlining government benefits to the beneficiaries with accountability.

Every individual registering on the portal will get a Unique Disability ID that would help in tracking the benefits received by them at different levels of implementation- from village, mandal/block, district, state and national level.

While the majority in need of a disability certificate is a non-rare disease linked as a cause of their physical disability, there are several rare diseases such as Muscular dystrophy – a group of genetic diseases that damage muscles – result in physical disabilities.

In brief, a Unique Disability ID will provide the following important benefits:

    • A Unique Disability ID (UDID Card) would provide ease with the paperless system as it will capture all data on the smart card, making it unnecessary to carry multiple documents or copies of certificates.
    • In the future, a UDID card would enable hassle-free disbursement of government benefits.
    • The UDID card will act as the sole document of identification for availing benefits
    • The UDID Card will help in tracking any misuse of funds at all levels – from village level, mandal level, district level, state level and national level

How & Where to apply for Unique Disability ID?

For applying for UDID card online, one needs to visit the registration page of the portal here. The UDID application has four different sections – Personal Details, Disability Details, Employment Details & Identity Details.
